Pipe Volume Calculator (UK) — Litres & UK Gallons

Pipe Volume Calculator (UK)

Calculate the internal capacity of a pipe quickly and accurately. Enter pipe length and inner diameter (or use outer diameter with wall thickness), then get results in cubic metres, litres, and UK gallons. Built for engineers, plumbers, and DIYers in the UK.

Calculator

Enter the length of the pipe run.
Choose how you want to provide pipe sizing.
Volume (m³)
Volume (litres)
Volume (UK gallons)
UK gallon = 4.54609 litres. Results rounded sensibly.
This calculator uses internal (bore) volume only. For full pipes under gravity, actual capacity may be slightly less due to fittings and gradients. Always allow a safety margin on site.

Choosing inner vs outer diameter

If you have only the outer size and wall thickness (common with steel or copper schedules), select “Outer diameter + wall thickness” and the calculator will work out the internal bore automatically. If you know both inner and outer diameters, choose that option for maximum accuracy.

Assumptions and limitations

This calculator assumes a perfectly circular pipe with uniform wall thickness and a straight run. Any kinks, reducers, or ovality will change the true capacity. For long or complex systems, consider building a schematic and summing each segment.

Frequently asked questions

Does this use UK or US gallons?

UK (imperial) gallons. One UK gallon is 4.54609 litres. US gallons are smaller (3.78541 litres).

Can I enter pipe sizes in inches?

Yes. Choose inches for diameter or feet/inches for length, and the calculator will convert everything to metres internally.

What about nominal pipe sizes (e.g., DN or 15 mm copper)?

Nominal sizes don’t always equal inner diameter. For best results, use the actual inner diameter from a datasheet or manufacturer table.

Will fittings and valves be included?

No. This tool calculates straight-pipe volume only. Add allowances for fittings and flexible hoses if you need total system capacity.

Can I copy the results?

Yes—use the “Copy results” button to copy cubic metres, litres, and UK gallons to your clipboard.
