Not always. Homes with an unvented cylinder have a pressure relief valve and a tundish that can discharge through a small pipe outside if the cylinder overheats or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. It is a sign the system needs checking, so switch off the immersion and boiler hot water and call us. Only a qualified engineer should work on an unvented cylinder.
